Bands come....and some bands go. Lead singers come....and some lead singers go. Some come back and some do not. In the case of Stephen Pearcy, for the year 2017, he has it all.
Stephen Pearcy, the founding member of the American rock band, RATT, not only has a new solo record "Smash" being released, but he is also touring with ex-RATT band mates Warren DeMartini and Juan Croucier.
I was honored to speak to him from his California-based home and to spend time interviewing him. I shared that I am a RATT (the original RATT band) fan and have followed the band since their inception.
KH: "What makes SMASH similar/different from the former RATT days?"
SP: "We started on SMASH over a year ago. Beau Hill was able to help with one song...and then we produced the record ourselves. I was approached by Frontier Records and I said yes. I wanted to be very diverse. I worked on this until they (all songs) were great!"
(“Smash” was mixed and mastered by bassist Matt Thorne and Pearcy and the legendary Beau Hill, the producer of RATT's first four albums, handled the mixing and mastering duties on the track “I Can’t Take It”.)
KH: "I have listened to every song - I really like 'Hit Me with a Bullet' and 'I Know I'm Crazy' reminds me of Alice Cooper." "What is your favorite song?"
SP: "I like them all. Any time I can be compared to Coop is great...Zeppelin, any of those. That is who I grew up with, who I like." "These are not typical RATT lyrics; no racing, no debauchery..."
KH: "Do you write most of the lyrics and where do they come from, what moves you?"
SP: "I write. Depends....it could be UFO's, it could be anything... I'm not preaching in my songs. Like 'Lollipop', it's a summer tune and 'Summers End' was a good final song. People are very involved in themselves, in social networking, everyone is staring at their phones... People do not walk and look straight ahead."
KH: "What is your most memorable moment over the years on or off tour?"
SP: "Headlining Madison Square Garden in 1987. It was my highlight because you think you'll never get there, you'll never get out of the clubs. It was like seeing 'The Song Remains the Same'. We didn't even think we'd last a year!"
KH: "What does it feel like to hit the road for RATT dates with Warren and Carlos on each side of you on stage?"
SP: "On the cruise, we only played for one hour. It was like, shit...we just got started!"
KH: "So, you have live dates with your solo band to promote SMASH and you have dates with RATT. Where will you be playing?"
SP: "We'll be at M3 and Rocklahoma and have a list of dates for the solo band. Then, we want to hit Japan, Australia and other countries for sure."
KH: "In closing, is there anything you would like to add?"
SP: "My fans aren't what I would call fans....I call them friends...they have all turned into friends over the years."
